When I was approached this summer by Loni in the library about what we could do to support Banned Books Week, I wondered... When she mentioned a DIY Fair-- I was all in.
This summer I had learned about Operation Write Home and their Any Hero Mail program. This program sends thank you notes, cards, and coloring a to troops who don't get a lot of mail. We want each and every military member to know how much we appreciate their sacrifices.
So we set up a "letter writing" station where students, faculty, and staff could make a thank you card and write a note of appreciation.
We gave some writing guidelines from OWH...
And people flocked to the table to get their hands a little inky...
I love how Beverly got so excited about stamping she started teaching right there alongside me!
The best part was that this is all tied into this year's College Reads! The committee selected The Good Soldier by David Finkel. His raw writing exposes the realities of the first surge into Iraq.
Now how does this tie into Banned Books Week? Well, last year's College Reads! book selection was a banned book and caused a lot of controversy both on and off campus.
It felt right to make the stars of the flag out of an old book page.
